Easing your child's first days at preschool

The first few weeks of preschool are a big step for the whole family. New faces, new routines and a few hours away from home can feel exciting one day and overwhelming the next. The good news is that with a little preparation, most children settle in far sooner than parents expect.

Start talking about school early

A week or two before the first day, mention school casually and often. Talk about the fun things your child will do there: painting, singing, playing outside and making new friends. Picture books about starting school are a gentle way to open the conversation and answer questions before they turn into worries.

Visit the campus together

A short visit makes the unknown feel familiar. Walk through the classrooms, meet the teachers and let your child explore the play area. When the first day arrives, they will already know where the toys are and whose smiling face will greet them at the door.

Build a simple goodbye routine

Children feel safe when they know what comes next. A short, predictable goodbye works far better than a long or hurried one.

  • Always say goodbye, even if it brings a few tears. Slipping away quietly can make children anxious the next day.
  • Keep it short and warm: a hug, a special wave and a promise of when you will be back.
  • Let them carry a small comfort item from home, such as a soft toy or a family photo.
  • Be on time at pick-up, so your child learns that you always come back.
Children settle faster when the goodbye is short, warm and the same every day.

Keep mornings calm

A rushed morning often leads to a tearful drop-off. Lay out clothes and pack the bag the night before, wake up a little earlier and keep breakfast relaxed. A calm start helps your child walk into class feeling ready rather than rushed.

Expect a few wobbly days

It is completely normal for a child to be excited in the first week and clingy in the second. Tiredness, new rules and lots of new people take time to get used to. Stay positive, keep the routine steady and celebrate small wins, like a happy wave at the door or a new friend’s name mentioned at dinner.

Stay connected with the teachers

Share anything that helps the teachers understand your child: favourite songs, comfort habits or a recent change at home. Through our Parent Connection App you can also see photos and updates during the day, which makes it easier to talk with your child about what they did at school.

Every child settles at their own pace. With patience, a steady routine and a warm team on your side, those first nervous days soon turn into mornings your little one looks forward to.
