Independence grows from small, repeated chances to do things alone. Hanging up a bag, pouring a drink or choosing a shirt all tell a child, "I can do this".

Keep tasks within reach, allow extra time and resist the urge to step in too soon. A little mess along the way is a fair price for a confident child.
